Byrne wins Marshall County GOP straw poll

Feb 03, 2010

GUNTERSVILLE – Feb. 3, 2010 – Gubernatorial candidate Bradley Byrne was declared the winner of the Marshall County GOP Straw Poll. The poll was held during the Marshall County Republican Club’s monthly meeting at Wintzell’s Oyster House in Guntersville. This victory comes after last week’s Lee County GOP straw poll where Byrne received 59 percent of the 500-plus votes.

According to Marshall County GOP officials, Byrne was the clear winner garnering more than 50 percent of the nearly 100 votes cast, outpacing his nearest competitor by more than a 2-to-1 margin.

“I was thrilled to learn that we won the Marshall County GOP straw poll,” Byrne said. “The momentum is building among GOP groups across the state and I’m confident that these folks will be the driving force behind a major shift toward electing conservative, Republican leaders throughout Alabama. The opportunities for our state in 2010 are vast and I am honored to be a part of this historic moment.”

Marshall County Republican Club President Russ Elrod said the group had an “outstanding turnout” for the straw poll and that Marshall County Republican voters have heard from gubernatorial candidates over the past several months and are “very well-informed” on the issues.

Bradley Byrne is a proven Conservative and a reform-minded Republican who has fought for education excellence and government integrity throughout his career in public service. Byrne served two terms on the Alabama Board of Education prior to his election and re-election to the Alabama Senate. During his second term as a hard-nosed reformer in the Senate, Byrne was named Chancellor of Alabama’s troubled two-year college system, where he cleaned up an entrenched culture of corruption, enforced new accountability systems, strengthened Alabama’s work force development system, and cut millions in wasteful spending. As governor, Byrne will continue to fight for education reform, robust job creation and government accountability. And, when pressed by those who oppose him, Bradley Byrne will not back down.
